Labshare
The Labshare project, funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, has as its core aim to develop both the technical infrastructure and a sustainable organisational strategy that will support ongoing sharing of remote laboratory facilities and resources. A key outcome of the project is the Labshare Institute. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Labshare Institute will act as an independent service broker to a national network of educational and research institutions who provide and/or utilise shared remote laboratories. Fundamentally, Labshare is about establishing a remote labs sharing community and fostering development of high quality, cost-efficient labs for education.
Sectors
While its origins are within the university sector, Labshare has phenomenal potential across the secondary, VET and research sectors. Labshare is currently investigating the provision of remote laboratories for high schools through its spin-off initiative, Labshare for Schools. Pilot trials have just concluded in NSW while further trials are planned throughout the different states to explore remote laboratory applications across the secondary science curriculum. Additionally, as scientific resarch has become increasingly dependent upon sophisticated and expensive research infrastructure, there are significant opportunities to improve research productivity and collaboration through use of remote labs technology. Remote labs can facilitate access to Australia's extensive pool of valuable research infrastructure and data that are currently unavailable to researchers due to organisational or geographic barriers.
